Library 2.0

Librarians and the Internet, Social Media, and Web 2.0

Andy Kirk

Selling the social web to art librarians - how do *you* do it?

To my mind it sells itself as a tool for library staff to get out there. Anyway in my continuous quest to keep on top of stuff I am looking for examples of current practice that people know work well in their libraries.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) I am delivering a session looking at the social web to a group of Art & Design librarians and would welcome any comments or suggestions that I may be able to add to my presentation to better contextualise it for art librarians

My experience so far in the teaching sector for Art & Design is that Blogs are being used quite well as a kind of e-Portfolio and marketing tool for final year shows, job applications etc I am wondering how librarians can complement this

Cheers

Andy

There are a number of websites that function partially as social networks and partially as stores.

http://www.deviantart.com/ is the one that comes to mind most readily
http://www.lulu.com/ is a self-publishing website that a lot of photographers are using to distribute collections of their work - also writers, of course.

I can't speak to every type of art, but I've really appreciated using flickr as a photographer post-undergrad to connect with other photographers, see great art, and participate in discussions and "assignments."

Especially for film, which is becoming a niche art, it's been great to see the variety and depth of the information I can find in these groups. Here's just a few of the more technical ones:

There are lots of groups that are more social or education and don't necessarily specify film photography. Here are two that use a combination of flickr and another website
